Audition Information

We understand that auditions can be the most challenging part about joining a new musical ensemble. Treat this time like a friendly mini voice lesson. We promise that you will feel welcome and we will start from whatever your level of ability.

For all of our choirs, commitment is key. You will be presented with a draft schedule for upcoming season at your audition. Singers are expected to participate in rehearsals and performances throughout the year, barring illness, family emergency, or similar unexpected circumstances.

For Shumayela (ages 12 to 16):

Shumayela is still a growing choir, and as such the audition process is much less competitive than for our older ensembles. Still, the applicant's 10-minute audition is a deciding factor in the decision to admit a new singer to the choir.
  • the applicant sings a short (30 to 60 second) a cappella song in any style (even Happy Birthday or O Canada are acceptable!)
  • vocal exercises to establish the applicant's vocal skill and range
  • ear training skill evaluation (short exercises to test the applicant's ability to recognize and repeat short phrases, as well as the ability to find a note within a 2- or 3-note chord)
  • a brief discussion of the applicant's musical experience as well as the applicant's other extracurricular activities and interests
  • a brief interview with the applicant's parent/guardian regarding the season's schedule and volunteer expectations
As with Kokopelli and Òran, singers are admitted to Shumayela with varying levels of musical skill and experience. Some boys with changing voices are part of this group every season.

Auditions have ended for the 2011/2012 season, however we occasionally have spots open from time to time during the year. If you're interested, please don't hesitate to contact us.
