Audition Information

We understand that auditions can be the most challenging part about joining a new musical ensemble. Treat this time like a friendly mini voice lesson. We promise that you will feel welcome and we will start from whatever your level of ability.

For all of our choirs, commitment is key. You will be presented with a draft schedule for upcoming season at your audition. Singers are expected to participate in rehearsals and performances throughout the year, barring illness, family emergency, or similar unexpected circumstances.

For Òran (young adults aged 20 and up):

Because there are usually fewer openings than applicants for these choirs, auditions are a competitive process for Òran. Applicants participate in a 10-minute audition:
  • the applicant sings a short (30 to 60 second) a cappella song in any style
  • vocal exercises to establish the applicant's vocal skill and range
  • ear training skill evaluation (short exercises to test the applicant's ability to recognize and repeat short phrases)
  • sight reading skill evaluation (a basic melody is presented in the applicant's vocal range, and the applicant sings this melody unaccompanied on sight)
  • a brief discussion of the applicant's musical experience as well as other attributes that could benefit our choirs (i.e. dance training, languages spoken, overall attitude and personality)
It should be noted that while auditions for Òran are competitive, it is part of our mandate to include singers with all levels of experience; the potential of the applicant's voice, as well as the applicant's attitude and personality, are usually more important factors in our decision process. Each singer is expected to contribute to the organization with volunteer work at some point in the season, and this is also discussed.

Auditions have ended for the 2011/2012 season, however we occasionally have spots open from time to time during the year. If you're interested, please don't hesitate to contact us.
